The Federal Government and state governments are moving to reduce transportation costs nationwide by expanding the use of Compressed Natural Gas and electric vehicles.
President Bola Tinubu disclosed this after meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Thursday, saying the governors had committed to measures aimed at translating lower energy costs into cheaper fares for commuters from October 1, 2026.
Tinubu said a joint Federal Government and state committee would be established immediately to coordinate the implementation of the initiative.
According to the President, state governments have a critical role to play because intra-state transportation is where Nigerians feel the impact of high fuel costs most directly.
The move is expected to build on the Federal Government’s ongoing investment in the Presidential CNG Initiative, under which more than 120,000 vehicles have so far been converted nationwide.
Tinubu said an additional 100,000 conversion kits were also being processed, while conversion centres and CNG refuelling infrastructure continue to expand across the country.
He further disclosed that the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is financing more than 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations.
The President said four of the projects were inaugurated in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri in May, including a 15-station refuelling network in Lagos and an Abuja facility designed to serve up to 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses daily.
Tinubu also announced plans for 500 additional CNG refuelling stations, on top of the 500 previously approved by the Fund, bringing the planned national network to 1,000 stations.
The President said the initiative was designed to ensure that the savings associated with cheaper and cleaner energy are ultimately reflected in the cost of transportation.
He expressed optimism that the collaboration with the governors would bring the benefits of the energy transition closer to commuters across the country.
