Just in: Okonjo-Iweala polls 104 votes to floor South Korea’s Myung-hee for WTO top job

Former Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has emerged as the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Although, she has not been formally unveiled as the DG, multiple news sources said on Wednesday that the former Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs minister polled more votes to defeat her only remaining opponent, South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee.

She reportedly polled 104 votes from 164 member countries.

It was gathered that Okonjo-Iweala did not get the support from the United States.

With the victory, the former minister becomes the first African and the first woman to lead the organisation in its 25 years history.

Her emergence is expected to be announced formally by the WTO later on Wednesday.
