The Labour/Civil Society Situation Room on COVID-19 in Enugu and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Enugu State Wing has expressed satisfaction with measures put in place to safeguard students from contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The group said this on Wednesday during the Labour/Civil Society Situation Room on COVID-19 sensitization campaign in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.
The leader of the group and Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Enugu State Wing, Nweke Odo, said that the NUT as a major stakeholder in the campaign mobilised a good number of teachers who embarked on monitoring of the SSCE centers.
He said that all students visited adhered fully to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) safety protocols.
He also commended parents, guardians and other stakeholders for providing their wards with the necessary support and protective equipment.
“We are happy with our observations so far. The students adhered to the safety protocols and we commend our teachers for their commitments to the safety of out students,” he said.
On the sensitisation campaign, Nweke said that the group was concerned that COVID-19 infections were on the rise in the state.
He said that the campaign was to educate the people on certain safety protocols as well as to know what their challenges were.
He said that the group had been moving round the state and would come up with a comprehensive report which would be forwarded to the state government.
Nweke appealed to the people of the area to observe all safety measures in order to be free from COVID-19 infections.
Earlier, the Secretary to the Local Government Area, Mr Linus Uwakwe, said that the council had done its best to support the people.
Uwakwe said that the COVID-19 lockdown had a telling effect on the people but added that some palliative items were distributed to cushion its effect.
The event featured questions and answers from the participants which included traditional rulers, farmers, town unions, trade unions and civil servants.
